Freshwater Barb • Schooling Species • Active Swimmer • Community Fish

📋 The Filament Barb (Dawkinsia filamentosa) is a graceful, fast-moving barb known for the long filamentous extensions on the dorsal fin of mature males. Its shimmering silver-gold body, dark lateral spot, and flowing fin rays make it a striking centerpiece in larger community aquariums.

In nature, Dawkinsia filamentosa inhabits streams and rivers with good current, clean water, and plenty of open space. In the aquarium, they thrive in groups of six or more, where their natural shoaling behavior and hierarchy can be expressed. Kept in schools, they are less shy, show better color, and interact actively throughout the mid to upper levels of the tank.

The Filament Barb is generally peaceful and compatible with other medium-sized community fish such as larger tetras, rainbowfish, and gouramis. A well-filtered tank with soft to moderate flow, stable water parameters, and a varied omnivorous diet will keep this species vibrant, healthy, and constantly on display.
