📋 The Rock-Boring Urchin (Echinometra mathaei) is a hardy, effective algae-grazing sea urchin, distinguished by its habit of wedging into rock crevices and gradually enlarging them into shallow depressions it uses as daytime shelter.
Native to shallow reef flats, tidepools, and wave-swept rocky shores across the Indo-Pacific, this species spends daylight hours tucked into rock, emerging at night to actively graze algae from surrounding surfaces.
Unlike some other urchin species that are known to "redecorate" a tank by carrying around loose frags or ornaments, the Rock-Boring Urchin is comparatively well-behaved — it settles into a rock crevice and grazes locally without disturbing the rest of the aquascape. It does have a genuine fondness for coralline algae, so aquarists wanting to preserve coralline growth may need to supplement its diet with nori or algae blocks.
With stable water parameters and ample live rock, it thrives as a Natural Algae-Control Reef Invertebrate.
