Peaceful, active and endlessly eye-catching, they come from the lakes, rivers and streams of New Guinea, Indonesia and northern Australia, and males put on dazzling displays that only get brighter as they mature.

    Our rainbowfish range from bold shoaling showpieces to tiny nano jewels. Boeseman’s Rainbowfish, in its classic form or the compact Short Body, splits its body into deep blue and fiery orange, while the Red Rainbowfish is the reddest of all and the Blue Rainbowfish glows electric turquoise. The Banded Rainbowfish flashes red, yellow and blue, and the Celebes Rainbowfish from Sulawesi sails along on black-and-yellow fins. For smaller tanks, the Dwarf Neon packs neon blue and red into just 6cm, the Threadfin trails spectacular thread-like fins, and the Red Neon and Spotted Blue-Eyes are tiny gems with sparkling electric blue eyes.

    # Care tips:​

    • Keep rainbowfish in groups of six or more, with more females than males.

    • Give larger species a long tank with open swimming space and planted edges.

    • Plant nano species densely with fine-leaved plants and mosses.

    • Keep a tight-fitting lid, as rainbowfish can jump.

    • Feed a varied diet, with live and frozen foods for the brightest colours.

    • Keep the water clean with good filtration and regular water changes.
