🐠 Convict Tang (Acanthurus triostegus)
Marine Tang • Herbivore Grazer • Reef Safe • Schooling Species
📋 The Convict Tang (Acanthurus triostegus) is a highly active and peaceful herbivorous tang, known for its recognizable white-to-silver body with six vertical black bars, giving it its “convict” appearance. Found across shallow reef flats and lagoons of the Indo-Pacific, it is one of the few tang species that can be kept successfully in small groups when space allows.
This species is ideal for reef aquariums due to its strict herbivorous diet and constant grazing behavior, which helps control nuisance algae. It thrives in systems with strong flow, abundant rockwork, and open swimming areas.
The Convict Tang adapts well to aquarium life when given proper nutrition, high oxygenation, and excellent water quality, making it an excellent choice for intermediate saltwater keepers.
