This is genuinely rare with careful, low-stress husbandry, but worth understanding before purchase. If your puffer ever inflates, never remove it from the water or use a net — handle any necessary transfer with a rigid container, lower the tank lighting, and let it recover undisturbed, since forced deflation and air exposure carry real risk of internal injury or stress-related death.
 
📋 The Map Puffer (Arothron mappa), also known as the Scribbled or Mappa Puffer, is a genuinely striking species, covered in an intricate maze of dark scribbled markings over a tan-to-yellow body — exactly where the name comes from.
Native to clear lagoons and sheltered reefs across the Indo-Pacific, from East Africa to Japan and the Great Barrier Reef, this species is genuinely one of the largest and most demanding Arothron puffers, capable of reaching up to 65cm.
This is a genuinely intelligent, personable fish — many specimens learn to recognise their keeper, swimming eagerly to the glass at feeding time. It's also a genuinely messy eater that produces substantial waste, so strong filtration is essential, and its fused beak-like teeth continuously grow, requiring regular hard-shelled foods like whole clams to wear them down naturally. This species is not reef safe, and will destroy corals, sessile invertebrates, and coralline algae, making it strictly a fish-only aquarium species.
