Care tips:

  • No swim bladder: all hawkfish except the Swallowtail lack a swim bladder, so they perch and "hop" between vantage points rather than swimming continuously

  • Small invertebrate risk: most hawkfish will eat small ornamental shrimp, crabs, and feather duster worms, even species otherwise described as reef safe

  • Stocking order: hawkfish are territorial and generally best added as one of the last fish to a tank

  • Jumping risk: several species (Flame, Longnose, Falco) are capable or determined jumpers; a secure, tight-fitting lid is essential

  • Reef safety: most hawkfish won't harm coral tissue directly, though the Freckled Hawkfish is not reef safe and will eat small fish
