🥒 Black Sea Cucumber (Holothuria atra)

Marine Reef-Safe Detritivore • Natural Sand-Cleaning Invertebrate • Slow-Moving Substrate Dweller • Intermediate Reef Cleanup Crew Member

📋 The Black Sea Cucumber (Holothuria atra) is a large, matte-black bottom-dwelling invertebrate valued for its genuinely useful role processing sand bed detritus, helping keep substrate clean through continuous, unhurried grazing.

Native to sandy lagoons and reef flats across the Indo-Pacific, Black Sea Cucumbers move slowly across the substrate, ingesting sand and organic detritus, extracting nutrition from the organic matter, and expelling cleaned sand behind them as they travel.

Naturally slow-moving and unobtrusive, Black Sea Cucumbers spend nearly all their time partially or fully buried in sand or grazing along the substrate surface, making them easy to overlook day-to-day despite the meaningful cleanup work they perform. They carry one significant consideration worth understanding before purchase: like many sea cucumbers, they contain a toxin called holothurin, which can be released into the water if the animal is severely stressed, injured, or dies, and in a small or poorly circulated tank this can be harmful or fatal to fish and other invertebrates.

With a mature sand bed and a tank appropriately sized for safety margin, they thrive as a Functional Sand-Cleaning Reef Cleanup Invertebrate.
