📋 The Red Emperor Snapper, also known as the Emperor Red Snapper or Sebae Snapper, goes through one of the most dramatic transformations in the sea. Juveniles and subadults wear bold red-to-black diagonal bands across a white body, and as they mature the bands fade until the fish becomes a solid reddish-pink adult with red fins.
It ranges across the Indo-West Pacific, from the southern Red Sea and East Africa to Australia and the western Pacific, living on reefs and in reef-associated habitats. It's slow-growing and long-lived, which makes it a true lifetime companion. Juveniles school together, but adults become more solitary and are best kept alone. Every Red Emperor Snapper we ship is feeding well.
It's one of the largest fish we carry, reaching up to 116cm in the wild, with captive fish typically smaller, so it's a showpiece for keepers with a serious long-term plan: we recommend at least 757L (200 gallons) to start and a considerably larger system for a full adult. It isn't reef safe: it won't harm coral itself, but it will eat smaller fish, crustaceans, and other invertebrates.
