They can inflate into a ball when startled, and their beak-like teeth are made for crunching snails and shellfish. From pea-sized nano puffers to giant river puffers, they bring a personality to the tank like no other fish.

Our freshwater pufferfish range from the tiny to the truly impressive. The Yellow Pea Puffer is the world’s smallest puffer, a golden jewel just 3.5cm long that hunts through planted nano tanks in pure fresh water. The Figure Eight Puffer, traced with golden loops, and the lime-green, black-spotted Green Spotted Puffer from Thailand are brackish-water favourites full of curiosity. At the other end of the scale, the golden-striped Fahaka from the Nile grows into a giant 45cm puffer that becomes the undisputed star of its own tank.

# Care tips:

  • Feed snails and hard-shelled foods regularly to keep their teeth trimmed.

  • Match the water to the species: Pea and Fahaka Puffers live in fresh water, while Figure Eight and Green Spotted Puffers need brackish water.

  • Keep most puffers singly, as the star of their own tank.

  • Run strong filtration with regular water changes, as puffers are messy eaters.

  • Keep a tight-fitting lid at all times.
