The Teira Batfish is the largest, hardiest, and friendliest of the genus, growing up to 70cm with a fascinating real-time colour-shifting ability. The Orbiculate Batfish mimics a floating leaf as a juvenile before growing into a large, social adult. Care tips

  • Plan for the adult: all batfish are sold as small juveniles but grow very large (45-70cm); have a concrete tank-size plan before buying

  • Not reef safe: all batfish will consume corals, anemones, and invertebrates, particularly when hungry

  • Delicate fins: handle all batfish with care, since their long juvenile fins are easily damaged

  • Feeding: live feeder shrimp may be needed to start a shy new arrival feeding before it transitions to frozen foods

  • The Pinnatus is the exception: expert-only, extremely sensitive to water quality, and needs a concrete feeding plan from day one
