The classic starting point is the Senegal Bichir, the "dinosaur eel," which reaches about 35cm, and its creamy-white Albino form. The Delhezi Bichir has bold vertical banding and does best as a single specimen. For big-tank keepers, the Ornate Bichir shows striking black-and-gold marbling at about 60cm, and the Saddled Bichir is among the largest bichirs in the world at 61-76cm. Care tips:

  • Lids: bichirs and rope fish are expert escape artists, so a tight, secure lid is essential

  • Tank size: from about 300L for a Senegal Bichir to 650-900L or more for Ornate and Saddled Bichirs, with length and footprint mattering more than height

  • Tankmates: choose fish at least half the bichir's size, since all bichirs will eat anything they can swallow

  • Diet: sinking, meaty foods such as prawns, fish fillets, squid, and earthworms, fed 3-4 times a week, preferably in the evening

  • Air: bichirs have true lungs and need access to the surface to breathe, so leave a small gap beneath the lid
