🐟 African Rope Fish (Erpetoichthys calabaricus)

Freshwater Ancient Lineage • Air-Breathing Lungs, Not Gills Alone • Genuinely Gregarious — Best Kept in Small Groups

📋 The African Rope Fish, also called the Reedfish or Snakefish, has a genuinely elongated, snake-like body and belongs to the ancient bichir family, among the last living relatives of some of the earliest ray-finned fish lineages. It's the sole member of its genus, Erpetoichthys, and it's native to shallow, vegetated waters across West and Central Africa, from Nigeria to the Congo basin. While primarily a freshwater species, it genuinely does inhabit brackish water in parts of its range and tolerates salinity up to about SG 1.020 in captivity, making it a flexible choice for a mild brackish setup as well as a standard freshwater tank.

Rope Fish genuinely have a true pair of lungs — a modified swim bladder — rather than the gill-assisted labyrinth organ bettas use, letting them breathe atmospheric air and survive in low-oxygen water, and even out of water for a time if kept moist. This is a genuine adaptation for survival, not evidence they thrive in poor conditions; they still need a properly filtered, warm aquarium.

They're genuinely gregarious and are best kept in a small group rather than alone. Nocturnal by nature, they spend the day resting in cover and become active at night to hunt by smell rather than sight. A tight-fitting lid is genuinely essential — Rope Fish are accomplished escape artists.
