When the tide goes out on a reef flat, isolated pools can crash to less than 5% of normal oxygen and heat up alarmingly fast — conditions that would kill most fish within minutes. The Epaulette Shark simply shuts down: it suppresses non-essential brain activity, drops its heart rate, and can survive over three hours like this, genuinely one of the most extreme physiological adaptations documented in any shark. If conditions get bad enough, it does something even stranger — it walks, using paired fins like limbs to cross exposed reef in search of a deeper pool. Its close relative, the Speckled Carpet Shark, shares the same walking ability and the same gentle, genuinely docile temperament that makes both species suited to a serious display tank.

Our Shark Collection

Both species we carry — the Epaulette Shark and the Speckled Carpet Shark — belong to the genus Hemiscyllium, commonly called walking sharks for their distinctive fin-based locomotion. Both stay under a meter in length, feed on small invertebrates and fish, and are considered among the most manageable sharks for a dedicated home aquarium, though "manageable" here still means a serious, spacious, long-term commitment.

 

 

Before You Commit

These are still sharks, and a real one at that — not a novelty purchase. Both species need a genuinely large, mature tank with a sandy substrate and low, gentle flow, and they'll be with you for well over a decade with proper care. We'd rather talk through tank size, tank mates, and long-term costs honestly before you buy than have you discover a mismatch after the fact.

Care tips:

  • Tank size: 1000+ L minimum for a full-grown adult, with a soft sand substrate and ample swimming room

  • Temp: 24–28 °C

  • Salinity: 1.020–1.025

  • Diet: Carnivore — chopped fish, shrimp, squid, offered by tongs

  • Behavior: Genuinely docile and nocturnal; the Epaulette Shark is remarkably hypoxia-tolerant and can "walk" across exposed surfaces using its fins
