📋 The Short Body Boeseman's Rainbowfish (Melanotaenia boesemani), also known as the Balloon Boesemani, is a selectively bred variant of the classic Boeseman's Rainbowfish, developed for its compact, rounded body shape while retaining the same striking blue-to-orange colour divide that makes the standard form so popular.
The base species is endemic to the Ayamaru Lakes of West Papua, Indonesia, and is classified as endangered in the wild — all Short Body specimens, like standard Boeseman's Rainbowfish, are exclusively captive-bred, with the compact body shape developed and stabilised through selective breeding programs rather than occurring naturally.
Like other "balloon" or short-body selectively bred fish varieties (similar to the Balloon Molly), this compact body shape is the result of a spinal compression trait passed down through breeding lines. It's not considered a health defect in itself, but it does mean these fish benefit from thoughtful feeding and gentle handling, similar to other short-bodied aquarium varieties. Beyond this consideration, they retain the same active, social, schooling nature as standard Boeseman's Rainbowfish.
With stable water conditions, a proper-sized school, and an appropriately varied diet, they thrive as a Compact, Vivid Dual-Colour Schooling Display Fish.
