This is a real shark, and a genuine, decades-long commitment — this species can potentially live 20 years or more, and an epaulette shark purchased today could realistically still be with you in the 2050s. It requires a genuinely massive dedicated tank, typically 300 gallons (roughly 1135L) or more for a full-grown adult, a fine sand substrate (coarse substrate can scratch and infect its belly), and must never be exposed to copper-based medications. Please only consider this species if you're certain you can provide a stable, appropriately sized system for its entire lifetime.
 
📋 The Epaulette Shark has a genuinely distinctive tan-to-yellowish body covered in small dark spots, with a large black spot ringed in white sitting just behind each pectoral fin — resembling a military shoulder epaulette, the genuine source of its common name. Juveniles display bold dark bars and saddles that fade into a more muted marbled pattern with age.
Native to shallow tropical lagoons, coral reefs, and tidal pools from New Guinea to northern Australia and the Great Barrier Reef, this species has genuinely remarkable adaptations for survival in shallow, oxygen-poor water — when tides strand it in warming pools, it can partially shut down brain activity and drop its heart rate, and famously "walks" across exposed reef using its muscular pectoral fins to find a deeper pool.
We want to be upfront: this species is not reef safe, and will genuinely eat ornamental crustaceans and small, sleeping fish given its nocturnal hunting habits. It's genuinely one of the more suitable shark species for serious home aquariums, given its tolerance for varying water conditions, but it remains an expert-only animal requiring a low-stress environment and careful long-term planning.
