Care tips:

  • Schooling species: the Longspine, Ochre Striped, and Yellowstriped Cardinalfish should be kept in groups (the Longspine needs at least 4, ideally 10+) rather than singly

  • Nocturnal activity: most cardinalfish are most active after dark; daytime inactivity is normal, not a sign of illness

  • Mouthbrooding: several species (Banggai, Pajama, Yellowstriped, Five-Lined) are documented paternal mouthbrooders; avoid disturbing a mouthbrooding male

  • Reef safety: most cardinalfish are reef safe, though the Five-Lined is a real predatory threat to small shrimp and feather dusters

  • Sourcing: we favour captive-bred Banggai Cardinalfish given the species' naturally restricted range in Indonesia
