Hogfish
For Marine Aquariums

"Hogfish" covers a genuinely wide range within this single genus, and it's worth knowing that upfront: the Candy Hogfish tops out at a nano-friendly 10cm, while the Spanish Hogfish can reach 40cm and needs a serious 150-gallon-plus tank to do it justice. Nearly every species here is also a protogynous hermaphrodite, born female and capable of switching to male — in the Spanish Hogfish's case, the transformation completes in as little as a week. Juveniles of several species even moonlight as reef cleaners, picking parasites off larger fish before graduating to a fully predatory adult diet. #FishShopPhuketThailand

Our Hogfish Collection

The Candy Hogfish and Blackspot Hogfish stay compact enough for a standard reef tank. The Cuban, Diana's, Lyretail, Axilspot, and Coral Hogfish sit in the middle, hardy and moderately sized. The Spanish and Saddleback Hogfish are the outliers, growing considerably larger and needing correspondingly more room and a fish-only or fish-heavy setup rather than a delicate reef.

Why Choose #FisheeeAquariumStorePhuketThailand

Given how much size varies within this single family, we make a point of confirming eventual adult size and reef compatibility before any hogfish leaves our care — a Candy Hogfish and a Spanish Hogfish are simply not the same commitment, and we'd rather you know that going in. #FishShopPhuketThailand

Care tips:

  • Tank size: 115–760 L depending on species — Candy Hogfish needs far less room than Spanish or Saddleback Hogfish

  • Temp: 24–27 °C

  • Salinity: 1.020–1.025

  • Diet: Carnivore — mysis and brine shrimp, chopped seafood; larger species also take crustaceans and mollusks

  • Behavior: Most species are protogynous hermaphrodites, born female; reef compatibility varies significantly by species and size — not all are reef safe
