We want to be genuinely direct on this one, since this species is one of the most commonly misunderstood fish in the entire hobby. Despite the name, this is not a true shark, and despite being widely sold in tropical fish stores, it is genuinely a cold-water species, requiring 15-24°C — standard tropical tank heat can genuinely cause fungal problems over time. It also grows genuinely enormous, commonly cited up to 90-135cm at full maturity, needing a pond or tank of 1,000+ gallons as an adult. This species is also genuinely listed as Vulnerable by the IUCN in the wild, due to dam construction blocking its natural spawning migration, pollution, and aquarium-trade collection pressure. Please only consider this species with a genuine, concrete long-term housing plan, ideally an outdoor pond in a suitable climate.
 
📋 The Chinese Hi-Fin Banded Shark is genuinely one of the reef's — or rather, the river's — great transformations: juveniles display dramatic black-and-white banding and a tall, sail-like dorsal fin, earning it the nickname "reverse ugly duckling," since adults lose this striking pattern entirely, becoming a plainer, reddish-toned fish with a much lower dorsal fin.
This species is genuinely a peaceful bottom-dweller, spending much of its time grazing algae and biofilm as a juvenile before shifting toward a broader omnivorous diet with maturity. It's genuinely social, doing best in a small group rather than alone, and is virtually never successfully bred in home aquariums given its natural migratory spawning behavior.
