🦞 Dark Red Crayfish (Procambarus clarkii – Dark Red Morph)
Dark Red Crayfish (Procambarus clarkii – Dark Red Morph) (Procambarus clarkii)
Freshwater Crayfish • Solitary Bottom-Dwelling Invertebrate • Bold Territorial Species • Intermediate Aquarium Invertebrate
📋 Description
The Dark Red Crayfish (Procambarus clarkii – Dark Red Morph) is a hardy, striking freshwater crayfish (Red Swamp Crayfish, Procambarus clarkii) prized for a deep, rich red colouration darker than the wild-type form and a bold, active personality.
Native to freshwater streams, wetlands, and slow-moving waters of the Southeastern United States (widely introduced elsewhere), this species has become one of the most established crayfish in the aquarium trade thanks to its remarkable hardiness and tolerance for a wide range of water conditions.
Naturally territorial and often aggressive, this crayfish is best kept alone or with robust, fast-moving tank mates that can avoid its reach — slow or long-finned fish, and any tank mates small enough to be viewed as food, are at genuine risk. Crayfish are also active burrowers and diggers, capable of uprooting live plants and rearranging substrate, so decor should be secured accordingly.
Please note: this species should never be released into local waterways, ponds, rivers, or natural water systems under any circumstances — it is considered invasive in many regions outside its native range, and unwanted specimens should be rehomed responsibly rather than released.
