🦐 Bamboo Shrimp (Atyopsis moluccensis)

Freshwater Filter-Feeding Invertebrate • Beneficial Water-Circulation Dweller • Peaceful Bottom & Current-Dwelling Species • Beginner-Friendly Freshwater Invertebrate

📋 The Bamboo Shrimp (Atyopsis moluccensis), also known as the Wood Shrimp or Fan Shrimp, is a large, gentle freshwater invertebrate prized for its unusual fan-shaped feeding appendages and its fascinating filter-feeding behaviour, unlike almost any other shrimp commonly kept in aquariums.

Native to fast-flowing rivers and streams across Southeast Asia, Bamboo Shrimp have evolved specialised fan-like front legs that they hold open in the water current, capturing tiny food particles drifting past — a striking behaviour to watch rather than the scavenging you'd expect from most aquarium shrimp.

Naturally peaceful and non-aggressive, Bamboo Shrimp spend much of their time perched in areas of moderate to strong water flow, fans extended, occasionally repositioning to find a better feeding spot. Their calm, filter-feeding lifestyle means they pose no threat to plants, fish, or other invertebrates, making them an easy and rewarding community addition once their specific feeding needs are met.

With adequate water flow and a steady supply of fine particulate food, they thrive as a Distinctive Filter-Feeding Community Display Invertebrate.
