We want to be genuinely direct on this one. This is not the same fish as the common domesticated angelfish (Pterophyllum scalare) sold elsewhere on our site, despite sharing a similar shape — this is a true wild species with genuinely demanding requirements. Most specimens in the trade remain wild-caught, and this fish needs very soft, acidic water (pH 4.2–6.5) with virtually no tolerance for dissolved waste or fluctuating parameters. It's widely considered a genuine "Holy Grail" species among cichlid keepers precisely because it's this demanding, and we'd only recommend it to aquarists with real experience managing soft-water, blackwater-style setups.
 
📋 The Altum Angelfish is genuinely the largest species in the genus, reaching up to 18cm in length and as much as 30cm in body height thanks to its dramatically elongated dorsal and anal fins. True altums are distinguished from scalare-based "Peruvian Altum" imitations by three bold vertical stripes and a genuine incision on the nose ridge just below the eyes.
Native to the soft, acidic blackwater tributaries of the upper Orinoco and Rio Negro basins in Venezuela, Colombia, and Brazil, this species genuinely inhabits slow-flowing water shaded by dense vegetation and fallen branches.
We want to share a genuinely important note for anyone new to this species: wild-caught specimens can be difficult feeders initially, sometimes only accepting live food at first, before being gradually weaned onto frozen foods. This species is also a genuine schooling fish, doing best in groups of five or six rather than alone, and even experienced breeders report that successful spawns often happen only once before pairs stop again entirely.
