📋 The Peppermint Shrimp (Lysmata wurdemanni) is a translucent, red-striped marine invertebrate widely valued in the reef hobby for one specific and genuinely useful behaviour: many individuals will actively hunt and consume Aiptasia, the pest anemone that plagues reef tanks and can be difficult to eliminate by other means.
Native to the Western Atlantic and Caribbean, Peppermint Shrimp display a semi-transparent body marked with fine red-orange stripes, allowing them to blend easily into rockwork and crevices during the day.
Naturally shy and largely nocturnal, Peppermint Shrimp spend daylight hours tucked into rock crevices, becoming considerably more active and visible after lights-out. Their reputation as an Aiptasia solution has made them one of the most requested reef invertebrates, though it's worth noting honestly that not every individual reliably eats Aiptasia — appetite for it varies between shrimp, and results are typically better with a small group rather than a single specimen.
With appropriate rockwork for shelter and reasonable tank mates, they thrive as a Functional Pest-Control Reef Cleanup Invertebrate.
