We want to be genuinely upfront about this one: in the wild, the Blue Spot Butterflyfish feeds almost entirely on live Acropora and Pocillopora coral polyps, and it's widely described as reluctant to accept substitute foods in captivity. Some specimens do successfully transition to prepared foods, but this isn't guaranteed, and hobbyists should confirm a specimen is actively eating before purchase. This is genuinely not a species to buy on impulse — please only consider it if you're prepared for a patient feeding transition and, ideally, already have some experience with corallivorous fish.
📋 The Blue Spot Butterflyfish (Chaetodon plebeius), also known as the Bluespot or Blueblotch Butterflyfish, is a striking marine fish with a bright yellow disc-shaped body, a distinctive sky-blue patch across the upper mid-section, and a black eye band edged in bluish-white for camouflage. Juveniles lack the blue patch, which develops as they mature.
Native to shallow coral-rich lagoons and reef slopes across the Indo-Pacific, including the Great Barrier Reef and Fiji, this species is genuinely not reef safe — it will nip at soft and stony corals, tube anemones, and ornamental shrimp, making it suitable only for a fish-only aquarium with plenty of open swimming space.
For experienced keepers ready for the feeding commitment, this is a genuinely beautiful, peaceful fish-only centerpiece.
