🐟 Boeseman's Rainbowfish (Melanotaenia boesemani)
Freshwater Schooling Community Fish • Dual-Colour Blue & Orange Display Fish • Active Peaceful Swimmer • Beginner-Friendly Aquarium Fish
📋 The Boeseman's Rainbowfish (Melanotaenia boesemani) is a strikingly bicoloured freshwater schooling fish, instantly recognisable by its sharp divide between a deep metallic blue-purple front half and a fiery orange rear half — a colour pattern unlike almost any other freshwater aquarium fish.
Endemic to a remarkably small natural range, this species occurs only in the Ayamaru Lakes system of West Papua, Indonesia, a limited habitat that has led to the species being classified as endangered in the wild. Every Boeseman's Rainbowfish available in the aquarium trade today is captive-bred, with aquaculture farms in Indonesia producing this species for the hobby since the 1980s.
Naturally active and social, Boeseman's Rainbowfish do best in a proper-sized shoal, where their constant swimming and the encouragement of tankmates bring out their most vivid colouration in males. Juveniles typically arrive looking washed-out and unremarkable, developing their full, striking dual-tone colour gradually over several months to a year with good care and quality food — a transformation many keepers find genuinely rewarding to watch.
With stable water conditions and a proper-sized school, they thrive as a Vivid Dual-Colour Schooling Display Fish.
