​Goatfish are named for the pair of long, sensitive barbels beneath their chin — not decorative, but genuine sensory organs used to feel and taste for prey buried in the sand. Most of the day is spent working the substrate this way, which makes them an active, engaging addition to a tank with an open sandy bottom. They're generally peaceful, sociable fish, sometimes schooling with other species entirely for safety in numbers. Our Goatfish Collection

The lineup includes the boldly marked Two Banded and Dash-and-Dot Goatfish, both easy to tell apart at a glance; the hardy, active Yellow Goatfish, also sold under its alternate name Goldstripe Goatfish; and the two-toned Bicolor Goatfish. All are natural sand-sifters, spending much of the day foraging along the substrate rather than swimming the open water.

 

 

A Note on Care

Goatfish need real sand to do what comes naturally — a bare-bottom tank isn't a good fit. Beyond that, they're not fussy: most take frozen and prepared foods without hesitation and get along well with other peaceful reef fish. #FishShopPhuketThailand

  • Diet: Small invertebrates, mysis and brine shrimp, chopped seafood
