📋 We also want to be transparent about naming: "Two Banded Goatfish" is genuinely a common name shared across a closely related species complex, including Parupeneus trifasciatus (Indian Ocean), P. crassilabris (eastern Indian Ocean to western Pacific), and P. insularis (central Pacific islands) — all extremely similar in appearance.
The Two Banded Goatfish has a genuinely distinctive silver-white body with scales edged in yellow, marked with two bold vertical black bars.
Native to the Indian Ocean, from Oman and East Africa to South Africa and east to Christmas Island and Java, this species genuinely inhabits seaward reefs at depths of roughly 12 to 20 metres, using its characteristic chin barbels to search the sand for food.
We want to be upfront: this species is not reef safe, and will genuinely root through substrate and consume small crustaceans and worms — rocks should be well anchored before adding sand. It's genuinely a shy, docile species, best kept away from more aggressive tank mates.
