📋 The Bicolor Goatfish , also known as the Dash and Dot, Half-and-Half, or Swarthy-Headed Goatfish, has a genuinely striking two-tone body — a deep burgundy-maroon front half marked with two white stripes, dividing sharply into a yellow rear half with a distinctive black spot.
Native to the Western Pacific, from the Moluccas and Philippines to Samoa, north to the Ryukyu Islands, and south to New Caledonia and Tonga, this species uses a genuinely fascinating pair of chin barbels that serve a dual sensory function — both digging into the substrate and detecting prey by touch and taste as it forages.
We want to be honest on reef safety too: it's considered reef safe with caution, as it will genuinely consume small crustaceans, worms, and ornamental invertebrates it encounters while foraging, and can decimate a tank's invertebrate population fairly quickly. It's genuinely peaceful toward fish tank mates and can be somewhat shy, benefiting from open sandy areas alongside plenty of live rock.
