🐠 African Angelfish (Holacanthus africanus)
A Dramatic Transformation From Dark Blue to Olive-Green • A True West African Rarity • A Real Geographic Outlier in the Trade
 
📋 The African Angelfish, also known as the West African or Guinean Angelfish, undergoes a dramatic transformation as it matures: juveniles show a dark blue body with pale blue vertical lines around the eyes, a yellow tail and lips, and a broad white vertical band at mid-body, while adults shift to olive-green, with the white band widening and the tail darkening toward black.
It comes from the Eastern Atlantic Ocean, from Cape Verde and Senegal south to the Congo, a real geographic outlier in our stock, unlike almost all our other angelfish, which come from the Indo-Pacific. It's one of the rarer angelfish in the aquarium trade, reaching the market only a handful of times a year, largely due to real logistical and political challenges around collecting from this region, a scarcity reflected in its price. Every African Angelfish we ship is feeding well.
It's not reef safe, and its natural diet of sponges, tunicates, jellyfish, and soft corals means it will nip at corals and sessile invertebrates. It can be shy on introduction, benefiting from plenty of hiding places in a well-established, fish-only tank, and is territorial toward other large angelfish. It reaches up to 43cm, so plan on at least 570L.
