🐟 Archerfish (Toxotes jaculatrix)

Brackish Water Surface Hunter • Banded Archerfish • Stays Brackish for Life, Not Marine

📋 The Archerfish, more precisely the Banded Archerfish, is genuinely famous for spitting precisely aimed jets of water to knock insects off overhanging branches into the water, hitting targets up to 2-3 metres away and compensating for the refraction of light at the water's surface as it aims. Its silvery body carries four to six dark vertical bars that genuinely fade and shorten as the fish matures.

A genuinely common myth is that archerfish need to transition to full marine conditions as adults. Multiple ichthyologists and experienced brackish keepers advise against this — this species does best kept at a stable brackish specific gravity of about 1.005-1.010 for its whole life, using marine salt mix. Some anecdotal reports suggest individuals adapt to fully marine water, but this is genuinely not the recommended long-term approach, and stable brackish water suits it well.

Genuinely documented up to about 30cm, with 20cm being a more typical adult size in both the wild and captivity. It's naturally found moving between brackish estuaries and adjoining freshwater as tides and seasons shift, and it's best kept in a shoal of six or more similarly sized fish. It coexists genuinely well with other brackish species such as juvenile Scats and Monos.
