Brackish Water Surface Hunter • Genuinely Famous Water-Spitting Predator • Stays Brackish for Life, Not Marine
⚠️ Please Read First
A genuinely common myth is that adult Largescale Archerfish need to transition to full marine conditions. Experienced brackish keepers and ichthyologists consistently advise against this — this species does best kept at a stable brackish specific gravity of about 1.005-1.010 throughout its life, using marine salt mix rather than aquarium tonic salt. It is also genuinely wild-caught only; there is no established captive breeding for this species.
📋 The Largescale Archerfish, also called the Seven-Spot or Common Archerfish, is genuinely the larger of the two archerfish species commonly traded, distinguished from the Banded Archerfish by its sooty colouring, larger scales, and six to seven irregular spots rather than neat bands. It's famous for genuinely spitting precisely aimed jets of water to knock insects into the water from overhanging vegetation.
While wild specimens have been recorded up to 40cm, captive fish genuinely more typically reach 15-20cm. They are naturally shoaling fish, but groups can genuinely be difficult to keep stable in captivity — a single, somewhat shy and nervous fish is often easier to manage than an unstable group where the largest individual may bully the others. If you do keep a group, aim for six or more similarly sized fish and watch closely for bullying.
