📋 The Commerson's Frogfish, also called the Giant Frogfish, is one of the largest frogfish species and a true ambush predator, with a globular, soft-skinned body covered in small warty protuberances and scab-like blotches. It can change colour to match its surroundings, appearing white, grey, yellow, green, red, or black depending on where it rests. It's native to lagoons and coral reefs across the Indo-Pacific.
It lacks a swim bladder and is a poor swimmer, instead "hopping" across the substrate on its modified, hand-like pectoral fins. It lures prey close using a built-in fishing-rod-like lure on its snout before striking with astonishing speed, and it will eat any fish or crustacean it can fit in its remarkably large mouth, including tankmates close to its own size. That makes it a showpiece for a species-only tank, or for housing only with fish too large to be swallowed.
Feeding is part of its charm: every Commerson's Frogfish we ship is feeding well, typically on live food, and training it onto frozen foods (by wiggling it on a feeding stick to mimic movement) is a rewarding project. It only needs feeding about every 4-5 days, and overfeeding can make it stop eating for extended periods, so small, spaced meals are the key.
