Marine Fish-Only Ambush Predator • Genuinely Large, Colour-Changing Anglerfish • Live-Food Specialist Feeder • Advanced / Species-Tank Only
⚠️ Important Information — Please Read First
We want to be genuinely upfront on this one. Commerson's Frogfish, also called the Giant Frogfish, is one of the largest frogfish species and a true ambush predator — it will eat any fish or crustacean it can fit in its remarkably large mouth, including tankmates close to its own size. It should only be housed with fish genuinely too large to be swallowed, or kept in a dedicated species-only tank. Feeding is also genuinely specialised: newly acquired specimens typically need live food to start eating, and training onto frozen foods (by wiggling it on a feeding stick to mimic movement) takes real patience. Unusually, this species only needs feeding roughly every 4–5 days, and overfeeding can actually cause it to stop eating for extended periods — please ask us about a specimen's feeding history before purchasing.
📋 The Commerson's Frogfish (Antennarius commerson) has a globular, soft-skinned body covered in small warty protuberances and scab-like blotches, and is capable of changing colour to match its surroundings — appearing white, grey, yellow, green, red, or black depending on where it's resting.
Native to lagoons and coral reefs across the Indo-Pacific, this species lacks a swim bladder and is a poor swimmer, instead "hopping" across the substrate using its modified, hand-like pectoral fins. It lures prey close using a built-in fishing rod-like lure on its snout before striking with astonishing speed.
