📋 The Foxface Rabbitfish (Siganus vulpinus), also known as the Foxface Lo or Common Foxface, is one of the most instantly recognisable marine fish, with a vivid yellow body and a distinctive black-and-white "fox mask" pattern across the face — exactly where the common name comes from.
Native to coral-rich lagoons and reef slopes across the Western Pacific, including the Philippines, Indonesia, and the Great Barrier Reef, this species is a genuinely outstanding algae grazer, widely valued for controlling nuisance hair algae, bryopsis, and bubble algae in reef tanks.
Like all rabbitfish, this species carries venomous dorsal and anal spines, similar in severity to a lionfish sting, which it raises defensively when threatened — this is exactly why even more assertive tank mates tend to leave it alone. Care is genuinely needed during handling and tank maintenance to avoid accidental contact. One quirk worth knowing: this species can rapidly change to a mottled, camouflaged colour pattern when stressed or sleeping — this is completely natural and not a sign of illness.
Rabbitfish are considered reef safe with caution: a well-fed specimen generally leaves corals alone, but if underfed it may nip at soft coral polyps. As a dedicated herbivore, ongoing access to algae is essential for long-term health.
