We want to be genuinely upfront about this one: the Blue Mandarin Dragonet is a specialist feeder that hunts small live copepods and other micro-invertebrates almost continuously throughout the day. It generally won't take flake or pellet food, and in tanks without an established population of live pods to hunt, this species can slowly starve over weeks or months even while otherwise appearing healthy — this is genuinely one of the most common causes of loss with this fish. It should only go into an aquarium that's been running for many months (ideally a year or more) with mature live rock and a thriving pod population, or a dedicated refugium supplying a constant fresh supply. Please don't purchase this species for a new or recently set-up tank.
📋 The Blue Mandarin Dragonet (Synchiropus splendidus) is one of the most strikingly patterned fish in the entire marine hobby, covered in intricate psychedelic swirls of electric blue, orange, yellow, and green — a genuine pattern rather than scales, which is highly unusual among fish.
Native to shallow lagoons and inshore reefs across the Western Pacific, from the Ryukyu Islands to Australia, this species spends its days slowly picking through sand and rubble in search of copepods and amphipods.
With an established, mature tank offering a genuine ongoing food supply, it thrives as a Genuinely Spectacular Specialist Reef Display Fish.
