📋 The Crowntail Betta is one of the most dramatic betta fin types, first developed in Indonesia in 1997. It's defined by a webbing reduction of 33% or more between the fin rays in males (about 25% in females), which creates the signature spiky, crown-like silhouette when the fish flares.
The reduced webbing makes crowntail fins more prone to curling and ray damage than fuller-finned varieties, especially when water quality slips, so immaculate, well-maintained water is the secret to keeping the rays crisp and the crown perfect. Crowntails can be more spirited than some other fin types, which is worth knowing even in a solitary display setup.
As with all bettas, the Crowntail is best kept individually, since males are territorial and must never be housed with another male. Never house it with another male or similar-looking fish.
