Genetically it's a variation of Veiltail, and the trait is recessive, which makes true Spadetails an uncommon find in the trade.

Many Spadetail juveniles develop a fuller, more Veiltail-like droop to the fin as they mature, so the sharp spade point is often clearest in younger fish. Among the long-finned varieties, this is one of the healthier tail types, without the extreme branching or swimming difficulty seen in Rosetail or Double Tail.
