📋 The Elephant Ear Betta, also called the Dumbo Betta, is recognised by oversized, wing-like pectoral fins, the paired fins just behind the gills used for steering and balance, which fan out dramatically compared to a standard betta's small, transparent ones. The trait is recessive, affects only the pectoral fins, and can appear alongside any tail type or colour.
Those big pectoral fins make the fish work a little harder to swim, so a gentle sponge filter is the best match: a standard hang-on-back filter's output can exhaust it or tear the delicate fins. It's also normal for Elephant Ear bettas to rest more on leaves or the substrate than other varieties, simply because the fins are heavier. That isn't automatically a sign of illness, though constant lethargy paired with clamped fins or no appetite is worth investigating.
Because the large fins slow it down, this variety is more vulnerable to fin-nipping tankmates than short-finned bettas. As with all bettas, keep it solitary, since males are territorial and must never be housed with another male.
