📋 The Veiltail Betta is the most widespread betta tail type in the hobby, identified by its long, asymmetric caudal fin that droops downward rather than spreading into a symmetrical shape. It was introduced to the West in the 1920s and has remained the backbone of the pet-store betta trade ever since.
The reason it's so common is genetic: the Veiltail trait is dominant, meaning it breeds true easily and consistently, unlike the more selectively refined Halfmoon or Crowntail lines. That also means Veiltails have undergone less intensive inbreeding for extreme traits, making them among the hardiest and least health-compromised long-fin varieties available. Most betta shows no longer include a Veiltail category, since its asymmetric droop doesn't fit modern show standards, but that hasn't dented its popularity as the classic, approachable betta for home aquariums.
