🐟 Plakat Betta Fish (Betta splendens)
Solitary Display Fish • The Original Short-Fin Form • Fast, Hardy, and Full of Spirit
📋 The Plakat is the original short-finned fighting form of Betta splendens, closer in body shape to wild bettas than any long-finned variety. It was developed in Thailand for organised fighting matches long before ornamental fin types existed, and its short, rounded fins and powerful, streamlined body make it a faster, more agile swimmer.
Those short fins are also tougher: they're far less prone to fin rot and physical damage than long, flowing finnage, which is why Plakats often outlive more ornamental varieties. The flip side of the fighting-fish heritage is a bold, territorial temperament. Plakats are more aggressive and territorial than long-finned bettas, so they shine as a spirited solo showpiece and aren't a good fit for community tanks, even one that might suit a calmer long-finned betta. As with all bettas, males must be kept solitary.
