📋 The Striped Raphael Catfish, also sold as the Humbug Catfish, Striped Talking Catfish, or Striped Dora, is a hardy, long-lived armoured catfish with broad black-and-white striping. It comes from slow-moving and still waters across the Amazon and Orinoco basins, where it hides under roots and rocks by day and emerges at night to dig through the sediment for debris, insect larvae, and small invertebrates.
It's peaceful toward fish it can't swallow, but it's a micro-predator with a capacious mouth that hunts actively at night, so tiny fish, dwarf shrimp, and fry can disappear. Choose tankmates that are too large to be an easy snack. It's sociable and does well alone or in a small group, and several will often wedge into the same hiding spot.
Doradid catfish are called "talking catfish" because they croak or squeak by stridulating their pectoral spines. Those spines and the body armour are sharp and tangle easily in nets, so use a plastic container to move one rather than a net.
