Given our specimens are sourced from the Maldives, they're most consistent with Myripristis kuntee, the Shoulderbar Soldierfish, though we want to be transparent that the common name itself is genuinely not always applied to one single species.
 
The Big Eye Black Bar Soldierfish has a genuinely striking bright red body with thin white fin outlines, a dark bar behind the gill cover, and notably large, dark eyes — an adaptation for its genuinely nocturnal lifestyle.
This species inhabits caves, ledges, and reef overhangs during the day, sheltering from bright light, and becomes genuinely active at night, when it emerges to hunt zooplankton, worms, and small crustaceans in the darkness.
It's considered reef safe with caution — it's genuinely peaceful toward fish and generally compatible with corals, but may develop a taste for ornamental brittle stars, serpent stars, and worms over time.
