📋 The One Spot Foxface (Siganus unimaculatus), also known as the Blotched Foxface, is genuinely striking, with a bright yellow body, a white head marked with a black stripe over the eye and chest, and a single distinctive dark spot toward the tail that gives the species its name. This spot genuinely varies between individuals, ranging from an almost perfect circle to a free-form blotch, meaning no two fish look quite alike.
Native to coral reefs and rocky lagoons across the Indo-Pacific, this species is an excellent natural algae grazer, closely related to and often confused with the more common Foxface Lo.
Like all rabbitfish, this species carries venomous dorsal and anal spines that it flexes when threatened — genuinely comparable in severity to a bee sting rather than anything more serious, though care is still needed during handling, and any puncture should be treated with appropriate caution. This turns out to be a real advantage in the tank: predatory or assertive tank mates tend to leave it entirely alone once they respect those spines. One quirk worth knowing: this species can rapidly shift to a mottled, muted brown-grey colouration when stressed, sleeping, or startled — this is completely natural and not a sign of illness, provided it's still eating and behaving normally.
