📋 The Double-Bar Rabbitfish (Siganus virgatus), also known as the Two-Barred Rabbitfish or Barred Spinefoot, has a pearlescent silvery-yellow body splattered with irregular blue markings, with two distinctive black bars — one through the eye, one behind the gill plate — that give the species its name.
Native to reefs across the Indo-West Pacific, this species is often found travelling in pairs, grazing on algae throughout the day.
Like all rabbitfish, this species carries venomous dorsal, anal, and pelvic spines, similar in severity to a lionfish sting, which it raises defensively when threatened — this is why even more assertive tank mates tend to leave it alone. Care is genuinely needed during handling and tank maintenance to avoid accidental contact, and it's worth noting this species is naturally timid, sometimes taking on a mottled stress colouration when startled, which fades once it settles.
Rabbitfish are considered reef safe with caution: a well-fed specimen generally leaves corals alone, but if underfed it may nip at soft coral polyps. As a dedicated herbivore, ongoing access to algae is essential for long-term health.
