📋 The Orange Spotted Rabbitfish (Siganus guttatus), also known as the Goldlined Spinefoot or Yellow Blotch Rabbitfish, has a genuinely eye-catching appearance — a pearly white-to-silver body scattered with vivid orange-to-yellow spots, and a distinctive large yellow-orange blotch near the base of the tail. This blotch functions as a genuine "false eye," believed to help confuse predators about which end of the fish is which.
Native to coastal reefs and lagoons across the Indo-Pacific, from the Red Sea and East Africa to the Philippines and southern Japan, this species is a genuinely fast-growing, excellent algae grazer, frequently available as hardy captive-bred stock, though availability can genuinely be seasonal.
Like all rabbitfish, this species carries venomous dorsal, anal, and pelvic spines capable of inflicting a painful sting — genuine care is needed during handling and tank maintenance. This works in its favour in a community tank, since even larger, more assertive fish tend to leave it alone. It's genuinely a little shy at first, often retreating to a crevice and shifting to a dark, mottled camouflage pattern when startled, before settling in and becoming bolder.
