📋 The Magnificent Foxface (Siganus magnificus), also known as the Andaman or Red Fin Foxface, is a genuinely dramatic-looking rabbitfish, with a pearly white face crossed by a bold black band through the eye, a dark charcoal saddle across the upper body, and red-to-yellow trim along all its fins.
Native to the eastern Indian Ocean, including Thailand and the Similan Islands right here in Thai waters, south to Java, Indonesia, this species inhabits coral reefs at moderate depths, usually alone or in pairs as adults.
Like all rabbitfish, this species carries venomous dorsal spines that deliver a genuinely painful sting — this is actually a real asset in the aquarium, since even assertive tank mates tend to leave it alone once they learn to respect those spines. Genuine care is needed during handling and maintenance: gloves are recommended, and a puncture should be treated seriously, with medical attention sought if stung, as secondary infection is a real possibility. This species is also a known jumper, so a secure lid matters. Reef safety is genuinely tied to feeding — a well-fed specimen generally leaves corals alone, but hunger can lead to nipping at soft corals and clam mantles.
