🐠 Blue Throat Triggerfish (Xanthichthys auromarginatus)

Marine Reef-Safe-With-Caution Triggerfish • Grey Body With Light Blue Spots • Genuine Dramatic Sexual Dimorphism • Genuinely One of the Mildest Triggerfish • Intermediate Marine Fish

📋 The Blue Throat Triggerfish , also known as the Gilded Triggerfish or Blue Chin Triggerfish, displays genuinely dramatic sexual dimorphism — males show a striking blue throat patch and yellow-edged fins over a grey-brown, pale-spotted body, while females lack the blue throat and yellow fin trim entirely, appearing more uniformly brown.

Native to a genuinely wide range across the Indo-Pacific, including the Red Sea and East Africa, this species is naturally found in large aggregations near reef drop-offs where current is strong.

We want to be genuinely clear: this is one of the smallest and mildest-mannered members of the triggerfish family, making it a popular choice for community-style setups where other, more aggressive triggerfish wouldn't be suitable. It's genuinely a capable, sometimes vocal fish — occasionally producing an audible grunting sound, and known to spit water at the surface in anticipation of feeding. It's considered reef safe with caution: it generally ignores sessile invertebrates but will genuinely eat ornamental shrimp it encounters, so it suits a spacious reef setup without crustaceans. It can genuinely be kept as a single male-female pair, or in a small group of one male with several females if introduced simultaneously.
