📋 We want to be genuinely upfront about naming: the Chinstrap Jawfish remains a scientifically undescribed species, currently referred to under the provisional designation Opistognathus sp. 6, though it's genuinely sometimes associated with the described species Opistognathus wassi. 📋 The Chinstrap Jawfish has a genuinely attractive coffee-brown and off-white body with a coarse, snowflake-like mottled pattern, a prominent eyespot at the front of the dorsal fin, and a distinctive dark band running from the eye down to the chin — the genuine source of its common name.
Native to the Indo-Pacific, offered occasionally from Indonesia, this species has a genuinely stouter, shorter body than most other ornamental jawfish, and doesn't grow as large.
We want to be honest: unlike the more familiar Yellowhead Jawfish, this species is genuinely quite shy, preferring to stay in its burrow rather than hover at the entrance, though it can dart out lightning-quick to grab passing food. It's fully reef safe, genuinely hardy, and feeds easily, but it will genuinely defend its burrow against other sand-dwelling fish like gobies, displaying an open-mouthed warning if an intruder gets too close.
