📋 The Helfrich's Firefish (Nemateleotris helfrichi), also known as Helfrich's Dartfish, has a genuinely gorgeous gradient body — a bright yellow head fading into a rich purple, then softening into a pearly white toward the tail.
Native to deeper Indo-Pacific reef slopes, particularly around the Marshall Islands and French Polynesia, this species is the smallest of the three Nemateleotris firefish and hails from somewhat deeper water than the common Fire Dartfish, making it genuinely a touch more delicate and better suited to a mature, stable tank.
We want to flag one genuine safety consideration: like its relatives, this species is an enthusiastic jumper, and a secure lid is essential — even leaving the acclimation bag open a moment too long can be enough for it to launch itself out. It's also worth knowing that two unpaired individuals will fight, so only house more than one as a genuine bonded pair, and since sexing this species is genuinely very difficult, obtaining a group of juveniles and letting them pair off naturally is the most reliable approach.
