📋 The Purple Firefish (Nemateleotris decora), also known as the Decorated Firefish or Fire Goby, has a genuinely striking gradient — a white-to-yellow body, a deep purple patch across the head, and fins trimmed in streaks of purple, red, orange, and maroon.
Native to reef rubble patches and outer drop-off zones across the Indo-West Pacific, from the Philippines to Australia, this species is genuinely collected from meaningfully deep water, typically 25 to 70 metres, where it hovers in pairs feeding on zooplankton in the current.
We want to be genuinely direct on one important point: this species is a notorious jumper, capable of leaping from an uncovered shipping bag or an aquarium with any gap in the lid — a genuinely tight-fitting cover is essential from the very first moment you bring it home. Beyond that, it's a genuinely hardy, easy-to-keep species once settled, hovering gracefully in a slight tail-down posture near its chosen retreat. It's fully reef safe and completely disinclined to bother corals or invertebrates, and pairs are genuinely monogamous, occasionally spawning in home aquariums.
