📋 The Purple Firefish, also known as the Decorated Firefish or Fire Goby, has a striking gradient, a white-to-yellow body, a deep purple patch across the head, and fins trimmed in streaks of purple, red, orange, and maroon.
It comes from reef rubble patches and outer drop-off zones across the Indo-West Pacific, from the Philippines to Australia, collected from meaningfully deep water, typically 25 to 70 metres, where it hovers in pairs feeding on zooplankton in the current. This species is a notorious jumper, capable of leaping from an uncovered shipping bag or an aquarium with any gap in the lid, a tight-fitting cover is essential from the very first moment you bring it home. Beyond that, it's a hardy, easy-to-keep species once settled, hovering gracefully in a slight tail-down posture near its chosen retreat. It's fully reef safe and completely disinclined to bother corals or invertebrates, and pairs are monogamous, occasionally spawning in home aquariums. It reaches up to 9cm, so a 75L tank suits it well.
