This species has a genuinely well-documented, extremely high mortality rate in captivity — most published estimates suggest 80-90% of specimens do not survive their first year, with most losses occurring in the first 30 days, almost always due to a genuine refusal to feed. This is not a beginner or intermediate fish, and many experienced hobbyists and marine welfare advocates genuinely advise against attempting to keep this species at all. 📋 The Moorish Idol is genuinely one of the most iconic fish on any coral reef, with a striking laterally compressed, disc-like body in bold black, white, and yellow bands, an elongated tubular snout adapted for probing crevices, and a dramatically elongated, trailing dorsal fin filament. As the sole living member of its family, Zanclidae, it genuinely has no close living relatives.
Native to a genuinely vast range across the Indo-Pacific, from East Africa and the Red Sea to Hawaii and the Eastern Pacific, this species inhabits coral and rocky reefs at depths of 3 to 180 metres, feeding naturally on sponges, tunicates, algae, and small invertebrates.
We want to be honest that in captivity, getting this species to eat at all is genuinely the single greatest challenge and primary cause of mortality, since it largely relies on foods that aren't readily available or easily replicated in a home aquarium. This is genuinely a tireless, restless swimmer requiring a very large, spacious tank, and is peaceful and shy, easily outcompeted for food by more assertive tank mates. This species is not reef safe, and will often eat zoanthids and other sessile invertebrates.
