    Catfish range from 2cm Otocinclus to fish that outgrow almost any aquarium, so the right choice depends on knowing what you're buying. Some of ours, like Glass Catfish and Otocinclus, need a group of six or more to do well. Others, including Pictus, Striped Raphael and many Synodontis, hunt small fish at night. A few are fussy feeders that need target-feeding, and two, the Paroon Shark and the Redtail Catfish, grow far too large for a home aquarium. Every listing states the real adult size and the group and tankmate needs.

    Our Catfish Collection

    Our 13 Synodontis include the true Upside Down Catfish and the larger False Upside-Down Catfish, which are often confused, plus the Cuckoo Catfish, famous for parasitising cichlid broods, the Featherfin, which reaches 30cm, and the Valentine, a trade name of uncertain origin. For small, peaceful fish there are Otocinclus (Dwarf Sucker, Golden and Zebra), the Giant Otocinclus, whiptails and Farlowellas, Banjo, Porthole, Honeycomb Tatia, Asian Moth, Stone and Bumblebee Catfish, and the Glass Catfish. The Pictus, Striped Raphael and Colombian Shark, which needs brackish-to-marine water as it matures, are predators of small fish. The Paroon Shark and Redtail Catfish are true giants for ponds and public-aquarium-scale systems only. Each fish is conditioned to accept pellets, wafers and frozen foods before sale, though a few fussy species, such as the Asian Moth and Stone Catfish, still benefit from target-feeding. #FishShopPhuketThailand

    Care tips:

    • ​Tank size: from about 40L for the smallest species to a pond or public-aquarium-scale system for the Paroon Shark and Redtail Catfish. Check each species page.

    • Groups: Glass Catfish and Otocinclus need six or more, and many Synodontis do best in groups, though some become territorial with their own kind.

    • Water: around 21-28°C. Otocinclus and whiptails prefer soft, slightly acidic water, while African Synodontis suit neutral to alkaline.

    • Diet: sinking pellets, wafers, frozen foods and vegetables. Some are night predators that will eat small fish and shrimp.

    • Handling: many have sharp spines that tangle in nets, so move them in a container.
